We’ve started off 2016 with gratitude! Alan Hackler from Bay Maples has donated his time and materials to install a water line from our rain barrels to irrigate our new ‘Izu’ persimmon tree. Patricia and Frank Nichols continue to support us in many ways, including generous financial and equipment donations.

Pat and Frank Nichols, organic gardeners for half a century at their home in Campbell, CA, have recently moved to Mountain Meadows retirement community in Ashland, OR, where there is a community garden worked entirely by residents. Both Pat and Frank learned to garden from their parents and grandparents in Atlantic coastal communities during the 1940’s. The various soils, climates, and plants of the Bay Area made for many ‘surprises’ until Pat discovered the gardening classes available through Common Ground. There, Pat and Frank learned to grow blueberries that tasted like the ones on Cape Cod, Swiss chard that substituted for collard greens of South Carolina, and Rattlesnake pole beans that tasted better than any ever grown in their childhoods. Double-digging and cover crops were added to the gardening schedule; permaculture and lessons from gardeners of the First Nations are now on the horizon.
